Economic Development

The Kwakiutl Band’s Economic Development program is a new initiative of the Band. It is designed to assist individual Band members, as well as the Band as a whole, in pursuing initiatives that will be of economic benefit. The Economic Development Manager offers assistance and advice to individuals wishing to develop business plans. The Manager also responds to requests from government and the private sector regarding economic development initiatives within the Band’s traditional territory. The Manager is responsible for identifying economic development opportunities that may be available to the Band and which will have economic, social or employment benefits for the membership.

Economic Development Department

The Kwakiutl Economic Development Department includes lands and resources, government and industry referrals and consultations and Kwakiutl forestry portfolio management.

We are the business and revenue production arm of the Kwakiutl First Nation.  We also encourage and assist Kwakiutl members directly in their independent entrepreneurial pursuits.  We monitor, protect and regulate the environment, cultural resources, wildlife and development activities of our reserve lands and traditional territories, including all lands, waters and resources therein.  We are instrumental in the approval process for any and all development project proposals put forward within our traditional territories and we participate in the development projects that are approved.  We always assure that the Kwakiutl First Nation benefits directly, both financially and socially, from any development or use of our territorial lands, waters or resources.  The benefits we secure from each project often include equity participation in the venture, royalties, business opportunities for the nation and/or members and employment and training opportunities for Kwakiutl members.
