JOB SUMMARY:
The Kwakiutl Band is seeking a highly skilled professional for the position of Economic Development Director. The EDD
will lead the Kwakiutl Band Councils Economic Development strategic goals. Reporting to the Heritage Trust Board of
Directors, the EDD will be responsible for developing, implementing, and reporting Economic development partnerships,
initiatives, and long-term planning for major projects. The EDD will lead and participate in policy work, creating
processes, writing proposals and seek revenue and funding opportunities. The Kwakiutl Band Councils Economic
Development goals are growth, prosperity, sustainability, and continuous consideration for future generations.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic and Operational Planning
*Lead and manage the process for economic development strategic goals, operational planning, and longĀ
term goal setting
Program and Service Delivery Management
*Continuously develop and maintain regional economic development partnerships
*Collaborate on needs for member education and training
*Assist with business plans and funding proposal preparations
*Coordinate economic development initiatives, including funding sources and terms, commercial debt and
equity financing options, structure, criteria, and documentation
*Prepare and submit regular and scheduled economic development reports to Kwakiutl Band Chief and
Council, funders, partners, and other stakeholders
Community Relations
*Initiate, develop and maintain contact with internal and external clients and partners
*Coordinate and participate in activities that support on-reserve economic development in all sectors
*Represent the Nations interests on and attend committees, boards, commissions, business and any other
individuals, groups, or agencies operating in the community
*Report on initiatives and provide advice, guidance, and recommendations to Kwakiutl band Chief and Council,
Leadership Team, and Board of Directors
Policy, Procedure, Legislation, and Regulations
*Develop, implement, and review strategies, policies, and protocols for the departments
*Be knowledgeable about relevant acts, regulations, policies, legislations, and treaties
*Supervise, mentor, and provide direction for Kwakiutl Band Economic Development department staff as well as
other departments and staff
*Perform other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by the
Manager or Chief and Council.
Financial Management
*Ability to manage multi resource sector finances and applicable regulations
*Ability and knowledge of corporate registry requirements and annual reports
*Ability to prepare general ledgers for audit
*Strong knowledge and expertise in financial management
*Develop annual department budget and monitor departmental budget for compliance
*Prepare funding applications and proposals and ensuring reporting requirements and deadlines are met
QUALIFICATIONS:
*Five years work experience and a degree in Business Administration, Economics, or related field or
combination of education and experience
*Three years experience working in an Indigenous community at a senior level
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
*This position requires a high level of analytical skills, detail oriented using professional standards for oral
and written communication
*Demonstrated ability to identify and support new community development initiatives
*Demonstrated success sourcing out and securing funding through grants or other sources
*Excellent negotiation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills
*Strong planning and project management skills
*Proven results working independently and following through on concepts, ideas, or initiatives preferably
with an Indigenous focus
*Exemplary communication skills, both written and oral with added value of notable public community
abilities, such as for community presentations
*Strong planning and organization skills with ability to work independently while working collaboratively
in a multi-faceted team environment
*Knowledge of municipal, provincial, federal, and Indigenous governmental systems
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Economic Development Director will work with the Kwakiutl Chief and Council, Leadership Team, Lands and
Resources, Fisheries, Forestry departments, Board of Directors. This position requires regular contact with
various levels of government and proponents. Work with Kwakiutl Hereditary Chiefs, Matriarchs, and external
consultants as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
*35 hours per week
*Dynamic work environment that requires flexibility as tasks and priorities can change quickly and
frequently
*Evening work will be required when meeting Kwakiutl Band Chief and Council
*Occasional travel may be required
*Highly sensitive and confidential information is constant including legal and political correspondence and
documentation
