    We are currently recruiting for a Water Quality Support Manager to provide full technical support for plankton monitoring and mitigation plans at all Mowi Canada West saltwater areas. The Water Quality Support Manager is a key member of the Saltwater Production Team and reports directly to the Technical & Feed Manager.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Specific accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Provide technical assistance to the production areas on environmental water quality issues but specifically related to plankton, jellyfish and zooplankton (identification and quantification).
    • Assist with implementation of the plankton monitoring and mitigation plan in association with production management.
    • Maintain and design training programs for site staff.
    • Coordinate purchase and maintenance for equipment used on water quality monitoring (i.e. microscope, rafter slide, sampling bottles, plankton tow, among others)
    • Have the flexibility to assist and visit sites in all areas, as required according to plankton, jellyfish and environmental related situations.
    • Create and review SOPs on topics related to environmental threats.
    • Continuously analyze mitigation results for any plankton or jellyfish concentrations, with the objective to adjust or add mitigation at SW farms.
    • Ensure each site is fully equipped with the required plankton monitoring equipment.
    • Coordinate third party commissioning for site aeration systems on a yearly basis before each plankton/jellyfish season.
    • Build and maintain the standard for plankton sampling equipment and its proper handling and use.
    • Assist in design, evaluation, and audits on the current Aeration Mitigation System (AMS).
    • Propose, design and run R&D trials related to environmental threats and mitigation.
    • In charge of summer student program to support water quality projects at different production areas.

    Requirements:

    • Self-motivated; able to work independently.
    • Though based in Campbell River, the incumbent will be expected to travel to (and periodically stay overnight) at farm sites.
    • Must be comfortable flying in float planes performing plankton identification flights.
    • Experience and Qualifications:
    • University degree level education such as Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in biology, marine biology, chemistry, engineering or equivalent.
    • 3 to 5 years of work experience in aquaculture, academia or equivalent experience.
    • Ability to identify plankton species and perform cell counts, and based on this interaction, provide clear recommendations and actions for site staff.
    • Good understanding of scientific methods and ability to interpret scientific literature.
    • Good skills.
    • Minimum Class 5 driver’s licence.
    • Boat handling skills and qualifications an asset.

    Wage: $80,000 – $110,000
