Kwakiutl Council Information Bulletin - December 1/20

Topic: Western Forest Products (WFP) Logging in Douglas Treaty Area

Council is aware that Western Forest Products is currently logging in a Douglas Treaty area between Port Hardy and Port McNeill. Steps are being taken by the Band Manager and the Lands & Resources Department to document the fact that WFP was told by Kwakiutl First Nation staff that this area is off limits to logging because of its location in the Douglas Treaty area. Clark & Wilson, the legal firm that that deals with indigenous rights & title for Kwakiutl First Nation, has been contacted and advised of this situation and steps will be taken to notify WFP and the BC government of the grave concerns expressed by both the Kwakiutl Hereditary Chiefs and the Kwakiutl Elected Council about this matter. Every effort will be made to resolve this situation as soon as possible. More news will be made available after we have successfully discussed our concerns with WFP and the BC government.
